Birmingham designer in warning on independant retailers!

May 3 2009 by Anna Blackaby, Birmingham Post

A Jewellery Quarter-based designer has issued a rallying cry to Birmingham shoppers to use their local independent retailers or risk losing them for good. Norma Murrain, owner of Silverfish Jewellery, on Vyse Street, specialises in silver and gold with a minimalist design style which takes inspiration from the Bible. She said the recession has been hitting independent retailers like her hard.

“In Birmingham we are fortunate enough to have enjoyed a wide range of independent boutiques for a number of years, but sadly we are seeing many of them struggle to make ends meet,” she said. “We need the Birmingham community to use their independent shops now or risk losing them for good.”

Ms Murrain believes the personal touch is something that is lost when shopping in high-street chains and is what makes independent shops so valuable to a city’s character. “Recently in this city we’ve been hearing about shop owners remortgaging their houses, having their overdrafts withdrawn and experiencing serious cashflow problems. “By spending your money in your local independent shops we can support those who were brave enough to offer something different to our city.”

“Birmingham city centre boasts more than 100 independent stores, which has helped the city to be officially ranked as the best shopping destination in the UK outside of London. We need to ensure that we take care of our independent retailers in these difficult times.”
