That's what friends are for…
Last night I had one of the strangest dreams I've had for a long time, and I've had some interesting dreams…
I dreamed I was walking alone on a journey when I came across two friends. They were on the side of the mountain that I had just journeyed over and they were sharing a book and discussing its contents. "That's an interesting book, I said, can I see?" It was a really thick book, as they showed it to me it fell open on a particular chapter. The chapter was called, "The devil's song". "Oh" I commented, "what's that all about, I've never heard of such a thing", I never had. As I enquired, the girl holding the book began to sing the song, as her friend and I looked on.
As we looked on she began to cry and complain, it was a song of bitterness and pain, as she sang it she whined and moaned and spoke negatively about herself and others. It was a self destructive song, full of weakness, apathy and hopelessness. It was angry and resentful. It lashed out at and accused others. As the song continued it complained about tiredness and pain, the words carried bitterness, un-forgiveness and envy. It was a horrible offence to my ears yet I stood and listened, not agreeing but feeling powerless to stop it.
Fortunately her companion was wiser.. "Stop she cried, enough of this devil's song, don't you see that this is the work of our enemy he sings a song of destruction with a tune so catchy that it resounds and repeats in our ears until we find ourselves un-wittingly repeating the words! Don't listen, stop!"
"But how can we fight this I said, it really is a catchy tune?"
The wise friend replied, "you'll recognise the devil's song by the negative, hopeless tone, the words are offensive and dark, yet the tune catchy, it's full of destructive accusations. You fight it by resisting it and drawing closer to God by singing thank full and worshipful songs to God.
So we started to sing "Jesus we love you, heavenly Father, we thank you for all the good gifts you give…"
"I can't, I can't" cried the negative friend as she held open the book,
"I'm tired, its hopeless, its everyone else's fault, I'm no good, this is no good, it useless, too much to do, not enough time, I'm in pain, nobody cares. The dinner to cook, the grass to cut and 50 goats to milk, I give up!"
"We can do this together cried the positive friend, after all, that's what friends are for, let me show you…"
She sang as she worked a beautiful melody, a thankful love song to God.
She cleaned and cooked, cut the grass and commenced milking the goats, as she worked and sang we joined in, her positive mood was contagious.
All of a sudden, the negative friend closed the chapter on the devil's song and joined in the work, she began to smile, she began to laugh and dance.
"Yes I can, yes I can" she sang, "I can dance, I can sing, I can win!" She danced, she sang as she cooked and cleaned and as she milked the last goat, she cried, "Yes! Thank you Jesus, you are my strength, I can do everything through you!."
I pray that each of us can find and be the positive friend, not only with words of encouragement, but walking alongside our friends, not judging when things get tough, but giving a practical helping hand, taking the lead by being the example of faith, hope and love, being salt and shining Gods light. That's what friends are for.
