The Advent of Christ

This week I’ve been listening to the gospels of Mark and Luke in my car, I confess that I often find listening to the bible easier than reading. As I listen, I wish I was there, walking with Jesus and his friends, sitting at His feet listening to his voice, touching His hand, or just the hem of His garment, what if I was there, with Him two thousand years ago… impossible I know so I listen and long for His second coming, my earthly dream to see His face!

Which brings me to the advent season. The word Advent is from the Latin word ‘adventus’ meaning ’coming’.

Advent starts on the forth Sunday before Christmas, falling on the Sunday between Nov 27 and Dec 3rd inclusive.

The season is celebrated in lots of different ways including the use of advent calendar’s, candles to symbolise Christ the light of the World and evergreen wreaths, which symbolise new and everlasting life.

Advent serves as a dual reminder, it’s a season of hope and expectation as we await ‘the nativity’ of Christ (Or for my children, Christmas and presents!), its also a time of reflection and soul searching as we prepare our hearts for the second coming, that glorious day, the consummation of our faith, when we see Jesus, face to face!

Advent is also a busy time for most of us, planning Christmas events at church, planning Christmas meals and gifts for family and friends. I pray that Christ will be the centre for all of us this advent, may yours be filled with peace and love!
